Cézanne’s Lessons for Contemporary Painting (at OSA)

Schedule

  • TBD 2024*

  • Wednesdays, 1 - 4 p.m.

*Will announce as soon as it’s scheduled.

About

Paul Cézanne is known as the father of modern art for a reason. When artists at the turn of the 20th century saw what he’d been working on in the south of France, it changed everything for generations of artists. So much of painting today can be traced to Cézanne’s influence.

Back in the 1980s, I made a deep study of the book Cézanne’s Composition by Erle Loran and came to understand the powers of form within a painting’s rectangle. It’s through understanding these dynamics that you can make stronger paintings.

The idea with this class is not to have you paint like Cézanne, but to become free in your own painting, as your understanding of the true dynamics of paintings comes alive. You will learn how Cézanne brought life and energy, through structure and distortion, and color interaction, into a composition. It will enliven anything you do with paint. Your painting and your seeing will open up and improve.

Once announced, you will be able to sign up on the Oregon Society of Artists' website.
