About Intermediate Painting at OSA - Session II

Summary

In this course we’ll approach painting from the standpoint of the liberating force that is Modernism. Starting with observational painting from a still life, we’ll experiment with various means of organizing the picture plane, moving from traditional concepts of space to a more flattened, energized, and dynamic space. We’ll work on color, using Johannes Itten’s elements of color, especially his seven points of contrast, and how to apply them. The goal is to mix up our ideas of what painting is and come round to a process and a painting that are both more rich and complex. We’ll work from still life, landscape, the figure, and our own mind.

Students will deepen their understanding of color, and open up their ideas of 'What is painting.' By the end of the class, students paintings will demonstrate greater freedom and an expressive unity.

*This class is for painters working in acrylic, oil, or gouache.*
