Painting Workshop at Hoffman Center for the Arts
”The World is its Own Magic”
Schedule
September 29, 30, October 1, 2023
10 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day (3 days total)
About
This will be at the Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita, Oregon.
Summary
We are inspired as artists to represent the world around us: meadow, shoreline, hill, forest, our fellow humans, or a still life. A still life is like a small landscape. Then, there’s abstraction, which depends on the same relationships that a realist painting does.
How does a painting, like music, come to appear as magic? We learn the “rules” and we go beyond the rules. We have to play a little rough. And that’s what we’ll do for the three days of this workshop. We’ll each take a subject, a drawing, and some paints, and we’ll do the subject over and over, working the shapes and colors until it rings like a bell.
Come with the experience you have and be open to jumping into new processes for exploring composition and color. As inspiration, you can refer to your own drawing and painting or an historical painting that holds meaning for you. Most of what you will be creating in this workshop will be studies and explorations, and out of it all a few will glow like magic. Your painting skills will make an important leap forward.
